Oskarshamn-based Be-Ge Industri is releasing a brand new seat for heavy machinery. The suspension unit in the new seat is separated from the actual seat. And it also offers entirely new possibilities. Especially when it comes to getting your arms and feet in the right place…
“Driving an excavator today is a bit like playing the church organ with your hands and feet eight hours a day,” says Ulf Krause at Be-Ge Industri.
Driver seat technology is now a science in itself, and each type of vehicle has specific demands. Depending on how you work with the type of machine in question.
Swedish Be-Ge Industri is the world’s oldest manufacturers of suspended driver seats and delivers many of the seats that are standard in many types of equipment from manufacturers throughout the world.
“This particular seat is primarily intended for excavators and other machines where there are heavy-duty controls in the armrests. And where you need to have all your body parts in the right place to avoid repetitive strain injuries,” says Ulf.
“The position of your hands and feet here is crucial for ergonomics. We are all different shapes and sizes, but most machines and seats would prefer that we fit a specific template. But we have now changed all this!”
The solution is that the seat is designed in two parts. The bottom has an air suspension unit that controls the hardness and seat height. The entire unit can be pushed forwards and backwards.
On top of this is the seat itself, which can also be pushed forwards and backwards, and adjusted for tilt, backrest and more.
The armrest is fitted between these two parts with controls attached directly to the lower section – suspension unit.
“It sounds complicated,” says Ulf.
“But you could see it as that you get an extra “joint” in your settings.”
The result is that the driver can displace the seat, with arms and all, but – he or she can then “move” with the seat’s top section – while the armrests do not move. As a result your arms move relative to the controls and you can ensure the perfect position for your hands relative to the controls.
The fact that they are secured with the centre of gravity in the base means you can also use really heavily equipped control carriers with integrated hydraulics.
The same applies to the position of your feet. As the seat can be pushed and tilted relative to the base, any driver can enjoy perfect feet placement.
“All controls are positioned in the seat top section and are easily accessible, making it easy to get the very best settings.”
“No matter how it is ‘designed’”.
BeGe 3900 starts at around SEK15,000 and can be fitted with different cushion designs, height adjustable 3-point belt, vibration indicator, heating, ventilation and much more.
As an extra bonus, BeGe 3800 which consists of only the upper section from the 3900 model, is being launched simultaneously. It is ideal for small vehicles where comfort is important, but where height adjustment or suspension is unnecessary.
